Ichthyomancy is a form of augury that involves divination by examining the heads and/or entrails of fish for prophetic signs or processing the next fish caught.

Etymology

Derived from the Greek ikhthus ('fish') and manteia ('prophecy')

Origin

This type of divination was popular in ancient Babylon, China and Phoenicia.

Methods

From approximately 1600 BC to 1200 AD, the people of Syria and Asia Minor used the movements of an eel in a tank of water to make predictions.
