Mera (glistening) In Greek mythology, a faithful dog who was transformed into the Lesser Dog Star, Canis (or Sirius). Mera showed Erigone, Icarius’s daughter, where her murdered father had been thrown. Immediately after the discovery, Erigone hanged herself, and the Mera dog pined away. The myth is found in Ovid’s Metamorphoses (book 7). The name Mera is also borne by a priest of Aphrodite.
