Choctaw Mythology

According to tribal legend, the Choctaw originated from Nanih Waiya, the Mother Mound, at a location near what is present-day Noxapater, Mississippi. This creation myth indicates that the Choctaw were descended from the earlier MOUND BUILDERS of the Southeast. At the time of early European contacts with them, the Choctaw were one of the largest tribes of the region, occupying territory in what is now southern and central Mississippi, with some bands in Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana as well.
