Murugan, originally the chief deity of the Tamils of Southern India, was eventually identified with Karttikeya, Shiva’s son. Murugan is a spirit of fertility, birth, death, and victory. In his original incarnation, he joined his mother, Korravai, on the battlefield to feast on the dead.
