Aberewa

Aberewa Ashanti (Ghana) The name given to both the primordial, or first, woman and a powerful earth goddess, who was also called Asaase Yaa. Aberewa figures in a myth that explains why the sky god, Nyame, withdrew from Earth and returned to the heavens. As Aberewa prepared food for her children, she pounded palm nuts in a mortar with her pestle. Each time she pounded the mortar, she bumped Nyame with her pestle. Annoyed, Nyame went away from Earth. In a slightly different version of this myth, each time the pestle bumped Nyame, he was bounced a little higher. When he reached the sky, he decided to stay there.
