Phytognomy

Phytognomy is the practice of predicting medical powers of plants from their shape.

Etymology

Derived from the Greek phuton ('plant') and gnomonia ('interpretation')

Methods

The mandrake root was taken as an excellent herb for all that ails a person because it was often shaped vaguely like a human being. Plants with heart-shaped leaves were assumed to be good for the heart.
