Gaunab

gauNab Khoikhoi (South Africa) The Spirit of Death. In a myth from the Khoikhoi tribe of South Africa, Gaunab had come to take several villagers away to the afterlife during a terrible drought. One villager confronted Gaunab, challenging him to a wrestling match for the chance of saving his people from death. If Gaunab won, he could take the young man along with the other dead villagers. But if the young man won, Gaunab must agree to end the drought. Gaunab agreed, thinking he would easily win. But the villager was very strong and determined. Although he was surprised to lose, Gaunab honored his debt in a very unusual way. Since he could not produce rain, Gaunab called on the more powerful gods to turn the young wrestling champion into a rain god named Tsui’goab, and he was given the power to bring rain to save his village.
