Imana (almighty) In African mythology (Banyarwanda of Ruanda-Urundi), creator god who tried to save man from Death. Thought of in human form, Imana is believed to be a large person with very long arms. He is a beneficent deity who tried once to stop Death but failed. Imana ordered everyone to stay indoors while he hunted Death. But one woman went out, and Death asked her to hide him. She consented and opened her mouth. He jumped inside, and she swallowed him. This angered Imana, who then allowed Death to have its way with humankind. Imana
is also credited with creating the first man, Kazikamuntu (root of man), who had many children. Their continual fighting caused them to disperse, and that is why mankind is found in every part of the earth.
