Memnoch the Devil (1995)

Memnoch the Devil (1995) is the fifth novel in Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles features her lead Vampire, Lestat de Lioncourt, in a debate with the Devil. In New York City, Lestat stalks a cocaine dealer and smuggler of religious art. He kills the man, and then becomes interested in his daughter. A shadowy figure stalks Lestat—Memnoch the Devil.

Memnoch reveals himself and invites Lestat to join him in hell. He takes the vampire on a tour of heaven and hell so that he can decide which side he wants to join. He learns about creation and hears the Devil’s side of the fall and his views of God as a cruel being. There are long debates about good and evil, and sin and redemption.

Lestat is shown the crucifixion and drinks the blood of Jesus while he is dying on the cross. He also talks with God. Because of its theological content, Memnoch the Devil is one of Rice’s most controversial books. Like THE TALE OF THE BODY THIEF (1992), Rice intended for this book to be the last in the Vampire Chronicles, ending it with Lestat going insane.

Lestat and other vampires were continued in subsequent novels.
