Caym - Camio - Demon and Spirit of Solomon

Caim

Caim, also known as Caym or Camio, is a Fallen Angel and the 53rd of the 72 Spirits of Solomon. In the infernal hierarchy, he holds the rank of Great President and is said to command 30 Legions of Demons.

Before his fall, Caim belonged to the order of Angels. This angelic origin gives him a particular complexity within demonological tradition: he is not merely a spirit of disorder, but a fallen intelligence associated with speech, interpretation, prophecy, and hidden knowledge.

Appearance

Caim is usually described as appearing first in the form of a black bird, often identified as a thrush. In this shape, he reflects the ancient magical connection between birds, omens, messages, and prophecy. Birds have long been seen as creatures that move between worlds: earth and sky, the visible and the invisible, the human and the divine.

After appearing as a bird, Caim may take the form of a man carrying a sharp sword. This sword suggests authority, discernment, conflict, and the cutting power of truth. In some descriptions, he appears as a man adorned with a tuft and the tail of a peacock, adding an element of splendour, pride, vision, and symbolic display.

These shifting forms reveal Caim as a spirit of transformation, language, and hidden messages.

Powers and Abilities

Caim is especially known for granting understanding of the voices of nature. He teaches the meanings behind the songs of birds, the lowing of cattle, the barking of dogs, and even the voice of waters.

This makes him a demon of communication beyond ordinary human language. Through Caim, the natural world becomes articulate. Birds, animals, and rivers are no longer silent background forces, but living voices filled with meaning.

Caim is also said to answer questions through burning ashes. This connects him to pyromantic and ash-based forms of divination, where fire, smoke, residue, and remains are interpreted as signs. The image of answers appearing in ashes is deeply symbolic: truth emerging from destruction, clarity from what has been burned away, and prophecy from what remains after transformation.

He is also known for giving true answers concerning the future, making him a spirit of prophecy and divination.

Caim and Disputes

One of Caim’s more practical offices is his ability to settle disputes. This is significant because many demons in the Solomonic tradition are associated with conflict, domination, illusion, or temptation, yet Caim is specifically credited with helping to resolve disagreement.

His connection with animal voices and the voice of waters may also point to a deeper theme: listening. Caim teaches that resolution often comes through understanding what is being communicated beneath the surface. In disputes, people may speak, but they are not always truly heard. Caim’s power suggests the ability to perceive hidden meaning, instinct, tone, motive, and truth.

Symbolic Meaning

Symbolically, Caim represents the intelligence hidden in sound, instinct, and natural signs. He is the spirit of the message beneath the noise.

The bird form connects him to omens and prophecy.

The sword connects him to truth, judgement, and decisive speech.

The peacock tail connects him to vision, display, beauty, and pride.

The burning ashes connect him to divination, endings, and revelation.

The voices of animals and waters connect him to the wisdom of nature and the unseen language of the world.

Caim may therefore be understood as a demon of interpretation: he gives meaning to what others overlook.

Martin Luther and Caim

According to later demonological tradition, Martin Luther reportedly had an encounter with Caim. Such stories reflect the way demons from grimoires and theological writings became woven into Christian polemic, folklore, and accounts of spiritual struggle.

Whether read literally, symbolically, or as legend, the association with Luther adds to Caim’s reputation as a spirit connected with confrontation, argument, spiritual testing, and the struggle between divine and infernal forces.

Caim in Demonology

Caim is one of the more fascinating spirits of the Goetic tradition because his powers are not simply destructive. He reveals, interprets, answers, and mediates. He belongs to the category of demons who possess knowledge: not only of the future, but of the hidden speech of creation.

Through Caim, the world is not silent. Birds speak. Dogs warn. Cattle call. Waters murmur. Ashes answer. Every sound may become a sign, and every sign may become a message for those who know how to listen.

Caim is therefore a powerful figure in demonology: a fallen angel, a president of Hell, a revealer of hidden voices, a prophetic spirit, and a mediator of disputes.

From “The Goetia: The Lesser Key of Solomon the King” (1904) Written by S.L. MacGregor Mathers

CAMIO or CAIM. – The Fifty-third Spirit is Camio, or Caim. He is a Great President, and appeareth in the Form of the Bird called a Thrush at first, but afterwards he putteth on the Shape of a Man carrying in his Hand a Sharp Sword. He seemeth to answer in Burning Ashes, or in Coals of Fire. He is a Good Disputer. His Office is to give unto Men the Understanding of all Birds,Lowing of Bullocks, Barking of Dogs, and other Creatures; and also of the Voice of the Waters. He giveth True Answers of Things to Come. He wasof the Order of Angels, but now ruleth over 30 Legions of Spirits Infernal. His Seal is this, which wear thou, etc.

From the “Pseudomonarchia Daemonum” ( 1583 ) Written by Johann Weyer (Johann Wier)

Caim [Caym] is a great president, taking the forme of a thrush [blackbird], but when he putteth on man’s shape, he answereth in burning ashes, carrieng in his hand a most sharpe swoord, he maketh the best disputers, he giveth men the understanding of all birds, of the lowing of bullocks, and barking of dogs, and also of the sound and noise of waters, he answereth best of things to come, he was of the order of angels, and ruleth thirtie legions of divels.

Original Text:

Caym magnus Præses, formam assumens merulæ: at quum hominem induit, respondet in favilla ardente, ferens in manu glagium [sic gladium] acutissimum. Præ cæteris sapienter argumentari facit: Tribuit intellectum omnium volatilium, mugitus boum, latratus canum, and sonitus aquarum: de futuris optime respondet. Fuit ex ordine Angelorum. Præsidet legionibus triginta.

From the “Dictionnaire Infernal” (edition of 1863 ) Written by Jacques Auguste Simon Collin de Plancy

Once with the order of angels, and currently, high president of hell, Caym commands 30 legions. He appears in the form of a blackbird, a main coifed with a headdress and adorned with a peacock tail, or human carrying a tapering sword, and responds from the midst of a burning brazier. It is said that Caym is the most wise occupant of hell, and that he could outwit even the most seasoned logician. It was with him that Luther had his famous dispute from which he spared us the details. Caym teaches communication with animals and waves and knows of the future.

Original Text :
