Altramat: A Demon of the Cardinal Directions
Altramat is an obscure demon named in the fifteenth-century magical text commonly known as the Munich Handbook. Within this grimoire, he appears among the spirits associated with the cardinal directions and is invoked as part of a divinatory operation.
The ritual in which Altramat is named relies upon a young virgin boy who acts as an intermediary between the magician and the spirits. The boy is not presented as the master of the rite. Instead, he serves as the human vessel through which the hidden presence of the spirits may be perceived.
This form of ritual belongs to a much older tradition of magical divination in which purity was believed to make a person more receptive to supernatural communication. Medieval magicians sometimes used children in visionary operations because they were thought to possess fewer spiritual impurities and fewer worldly distractions than adults.
Within this context, Altramat functions as a spirit connected with direction and revelation. His presence is not described through an elaborate mythology, nor is a detailed personality preserved for him. Like many demons found in medieval magical manuscripts, he survives primarily through the ritual framework in which his name was recorded.
That obscurity is part of what makes figures such as Altramat so fascinating. The surviving name represents only a fragment of a much larger magical system once practised by people who believed that invisible intelligences could be summoned into structured ritual space.
