Chu-lin Chi’i-Hsien (seven immortals of bamboo grove) In Chinese legend, seven men who drank and conversed together in a bamboo grove, or in a place called Bamboo Grove, about 275 b.c.e. They are called the Seven Immortals and were known for getting drunk and challenging Confucian beliefs. They are Juan Chi and his nephew, Juan Hsien; Liu Ling; Hsiang Hsiu; Wang Jung; Shan T’ao; and Hai K’ang.
