Dardanus (burner-up) In Greek mythology, prime ancestor of the Trojans, son of Zeus and Electra; brother of Iasim; married to Chryse and after her death to Bateia (Arisbe); father of Erichthonius and Ilus and of Herophile by Neso. He founded Dardania, which later became Troy, at the foot of Mount Ida. He is mentioned in Vergil’s Aeneid (book 5) and Homer’s Iliad (book 20). The mares of Dardanus are mares from which Boreas, who changed himself into a horse, later fathered 12 steeds that could not be overtaken.
