Elgin Marbles Popular name given to Greek sculptures from the Parthenon at Athens portraying Theseus, Lapiths, Centaurs, three Fates, Iris, and others. They were removed from the ruins by the seventh earl of Elgin in 1801–1803. The sculptures, displayed in the British Museum as the “Parthenon Sculptures,” are the work of Phidias (c. 490–415 b.c.e.) or his studio and pupils.
