Pedro the Cruel

Pedro the Cruel (1334–1369) In medieval history and legend, king of Castile and León, who appears in numerous Spanish ballads. Don Pedro was popular with the people but hated by the nobles. Legend credits him with the death of his wife, Queen Blanche, and the murder of her three brothers. When Pedro died in battle, his head was cut off and his remains buried. Later they were disinterred by his daughter, the wife of the English John of Gaunt, and deposited in Seville.
