Literomancy

Literomancy is a form of divination based upon the interpretation of letters, written characters, names and other elements of written language. The practitioner, known as a literomancer, examines a chosen character, word or name and interprets its form, associations and circumstances in order to obtain information concerning character, destiny or future events.

The name is derived from the Latin litera, meaning “letter”, and the Greek manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. In this context, a “letter” should be understood broadly as an element of a written language. It may therefore refer to an alphabetic letter or word, such as one written in Spanish or English, as well as to an individual Chinese character.

History

A well-known form of literomancy survives in Chinese-speaking communities under the name 測字 / 测字, pronounced cè zì in Pinyin. The practice traditionally centres upon individual written characters and personal names, which can be interpreted for indications concerning the individual and their destiny.

Names are particularly important because of the traditional belief that a person’s name may exert an influence upon fortune and the course of life. The structure and symbolism of written Chinese also provide especially extensive possibilities for interpretation, since individual characters may be analysed through their components, forms and associations.

Although traditionally practised with Chinese characters and personal names, the principle of literomancy has been extended into modern forms of written identity. Foreign words, usernames, e-mail addresses and instant-message handles may all potentially become subjects for interpretation when treated as meaningful written representations of the person using them.

Methods

In a typical literomantic consultation, the client presents a subject for interpretation, such as a single written character, a word or a personal name. The literomancer then examines the chosen subject together with the circumstances surrounding its selection.

The interpretation may involve the appearance or structure of the writing, the significance attached to the chosen character, the client’s reason for selecting it, and other information connected with the question being asked. Details supplied by the client or observed by the practitioner may also be incorporated into the reading.

The client’s choice itself can become significant. Rather than treating the selected character as an arbitrary object, the literomancer may regard the act of choosing it as part of the divinatory process, believing that the selection reflects circumstances or influences relevant to the question.

Some practitioners extend similar principles to signatures. The curves, strokes, lines and overall form of an individual’s signature may be examined in a manner superficially resembling handwriting analysis. The difference is that the literomancer interprets these characteristics through intuition, symbolism and divinatory principles rather than through conventional analytical methods of handwriting examination.

Literomancy therefore turns written language into an oracle. Letters and characters cease to function only as tools for communication and become symbolic forms whose shapes, combinations and associations may supposedly reveal information beyond their literal meaning.

Within the Occult World classification, literomancy belongs most naturally to Divination by Observation, because the practitioner examines and interprets written forms, names, characters and signatures rather than producing an answer through casting objects or waiting for an unsolicited natural omen.

Enter the Hidden Language Behind the Written Word

Literomancy reflects an idea that appears repeatedly throughout occult tradition: writing can carry more than its obvious meaning. A name, character, sigil or carefully formed line may become a vessel for destiny, identity and hidden correspondence when approached through an esoteric system.

If you want to understand how occult traditions transform language, symbols and names into instruments of divination and magical power, enter the Occult World Mystery School and go far beyond superficial fortune-telling. Study divination, sacred alphabets, magical names, sigils, grimoires, spirits and the systems through which written signs have been turned into keys to the unseen. There are thousands of spirits, gods, demons, magical systems, grimoires and forgotten traditions waiting beyond it. Stop merely reading the symbols and start learning the hidden structures that give them power.
