Pegomancy is a form of hydromancy or divination by water that involves springs and fountains.

Etymology

Derived from the Greek pege ('spring') and manteia ('prophecy')

Methods

A change in colour could be an omen, such as a spring turning reddish to symbolize the approach of war. Shapes formed by the swirl of a spring or the play of a fountain were also given appropriate interpretations.

It is also associated with crystalomancy (also known as crystal gazing or scrying). Interpretations were made by dropping stones in sacred pools or springs and observing their movements.
