Juno and the Peacock Aesopic fable found in various European collections. A peacock once placed a petition before the goddess Juno asking for the voice of a nightingale. Juno refused his request; when the bird persisted and said that he was the goddess’s favourite bird, she replied: “Be content with your lot.” Moral: One cannot be first in everything.
Sean O’Casey’s play Juno and the Paycock has the antihero, Jack Boyle, called Captain Jack, portrayed as a strutting “paycock.” His wife, Juno, however, sees through her husband’s poses and defections.
