All-Hallown Summer

All-Hallown Summer— The warm season which sets in about Halloween; sometimes called “the second summer,” or (in America) “Indian summer.” The French call it L’Été de St. Martin, or “St. Martin’s Summer,” and date it from about October 9 to November 11 (which is MARTINMAS). Also called “St. Luke’s Summer” (October 18 is St. Luke’s Day). In Henry IV Part One, Shakespeare uses the term: “Farewell, thou latter spring; farewell, All-hallown Summer!”
