Amniomancy: Divination by the Caul

Amniomancy is a form of divination in which the future of a newborn child is interpreted from the caul, the thin portion of the amniotic membrane that sometimes remains over the head or face at birth. The name derives from amnion, referring to the membrane surrounding the developing child, combined with -mancy, meaning divination.

In traditional amniomancy, the appearance and colour of the caul were treated as omens concerning the life awaiting the newborn. Wise women and other traditional diviners were said to examine it for signs of fortune or adversity. A red caul was considered favourable and promised happiness or good fortune, while a lead-coloured caul was interpreted as a warning that hardship and misfortune might follow the child through life.
