Fraus

Fraus is the Roman goddess of deceit, treachery, fraud, and betrayal. Her name literally means deceit or fraud, and she personifies the hidden forces of dishonesty, manipulation, false appearances, and broken trust.

In Roman mythology, Fraus is described as the daughter of Orcus and Nox. Orcus, also identified with Dis, Hades, or Pluto, is a god of the Underworld and the punisher of broken oaths. Nox is the goddess of Night, the dark primordial force from which many shadowy powers emerge.

This parentage reveals Fraus’s nature clearly. She is born from death and darkness, from the Underworld and the night. Her realm is not open conflict, but concealed danger.

Goddess of Treachery

Daughter of Orcus

Fraus’s father, Orcus, is connected with the Underworld, death, punishment, and the consequences of broken oaths. This makes her association with deceit especially powerful.

In ancient belief, false promises and violated oaths were not merely social failures. They were spiritual crimes. To deceive, betray, or break faith was to invite the attention of chthonic powers.

Daughter of Nox

Fraus’s mother, Nox, is the goddess of Night. Night conceals, covers, and obscures. It is the realm of shadows, secrets, dreams, fear, and hidden movement.

Through Nox, Fraus is connected with secrecy and invisibility. Deceit does not usually announce itself. It moves under cover, whispering instead of shouting, disguising itself until the damage is already done.
