Mananaan

Mananaan (he of the Isle of Man) In Celtic mythology, son of the sea god Lir, a Tuatha de Danann, husband of Fand and Uchtdelbh, father of Mongan and Niamh. Mananaan had a ship, Wave Sweeper, which was self-propelled, as well as a horse, Splendid Mane, with which he traveled over the sea. Mananaan was patron god of Irish seamen, protector of the Isle of Man and the Isle of Aran, where his home, Emhain of the Apple Trees, was located. In Welsh mythology he is known as Manawyddan and possessed a magic chariot as well as a cloak of invisibility. In Ulysses James Joyce calls the “whitemaned seahorses, champing, brightwindbridled, the steeds of Mananaan.”
