Micromancy

Micromancy is a form of divination involving the smallest object available or at hand. Rather than requiring a specialised instrument, the practice makes use of a minute or seemingly insignificant object as the focus of divinatory interpretation.

The name is derived from the Greek mikros, meaning “small”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. Micromancy therefore means, literally, divination by small things.

Method

Descriptions of micromancy are extremely brief and do not preserve an elaborate or standardised method. Its defining characteristic is the use of the smallest object immediately available to the diviner.

The object itself becomes the medium of the divination. Its appearance, form or other noticeable characteristics may be treated as significant, although surviving definitions do not provide a consistent system explaining precisely how particular objects or features should be interpreted.

Micromancy is therefore notable for the simplicity of its principle. Where other divinatory practices depend upon specially prepared cards, bones, stones, mirrors or ritual implements, micromancy suggests that even the smallest and most ordinary object can become a source of meaning when approached divinationally.
