Fingers

Each of the phalanges on each finger is associated with an astrological sign. The first phalanges are cardinal, the middle ones are fixed and the bottom ones are mutable.

The thumb

The thumb is considered to have two phalanges only the top one is associated with will and action and the lower one with capacity for thought and logical analysis. The base of the thumb is associated with vitality and strength – prominent and or well shaped or developed is good. Thumb is claimed to be associated with intelligence as well as the Ascendant. In Asia there are palmists, who read the thumb exclusively and ignore the rest of the hand.

The flexibility of the 1st knuckle of the thumb reveals how adaptable a person is to new situations and environments. In some cases the thumb is so flexible that it bends back beyond a 90 degree angle. This extreme flexibility is most visible when holding a pen for writing. The greater the flexibility of the knuckle, the more adaptable the person is. In cases where the thumb will bend far back on itself, the individual will quickly and easily adjust to any new environment in which they find themselves. This class of person will quickly outperform their peers, regardless of the morality of their actions. For this reason, owners of extremely flexible thumbs must exercise caution in choosing their friends. If associated with a group of philanthropists, they will improve more lives than their peers. If with a group of voluptuaries, they will exceed all others in their debauch.

The Jupiter finger (index)

The pointer finger and the mound just below it are ruled by Jupiter. The Jupiter finger can be looked upon as the trigger finger. It represents authority, leadership, motivation, confidence, pride, ambition, goals, power, boundaries, status, and ideals. When it is longer than the ring finger – the hand belongs to a natural leader. A high set Jupiter finger is an indication of a high need to feel respected. An overly large Jupiter finger shows that the subject likes to be in charge. A bent , twisted or short Jupiter finger often indicates problems with authority figures, self-esteem issues or struggles with personal power.

The Saturn finger (middle)

The middle finger and the mound just below it are ruled by Saturn. In the hand the areas of Saturn measure completion, accountability and self-worth. It is here where the palmist looks for the subjects attitude towards responsibility and to see if he or she is doing what they are supposed to. Keywords include integrity, security, discipline, should, prudence, prudishness, duty, obligation, money, values, resources, environmentalism, pessimism, conformity and structure. Because of the emphasis on security, employment and success in our culture the Saturn finger tends to carry its share of baggage and it is not uncommon for the finger to be twisted, overgrown or challenged in some other way.

The Apollo (Sun) finger (ring)

The ring finger and the mound just below it are ruled by the Sun, commonly referred to as Apollo. Apollo in the hand reveals the subject’s feelings about expression of the self. Keywords include creativity, aesthetics, art, beauty, the persona, personal expression, niche, social skills, applause. The size and shape of the lower zone of the Apollo finger shows whether the subject feels acceptance in the world. A star on the mound of Apollo is an indication of exceptional creative talents. This finger has to do with emotions, desires and persona. It can be straight (stubborn) —or bent (subtle)–the giver.

The Mercury finger (pinky)

The little finger and the mound just below it are ruled by Mercury. Such a small area of the hand reveals a lot about its owner. Keywords for Mercury are communications, ingenuity, negotiations, invention, intimacy, strategy, marketing, healer. A long Mercury finger indicates that the subject is quick, sharp and clever though not necessarily a good communicator. A bent Mercury finger may imply issues regarding trust. A low set Mercury finger reveals fears about abandonment.

Other traits

Nails
In addition there are twelve types of fingernails, which are associated with astrological signs and can be used as a tool in chart rectification. The matching of these with actual fingernails is harder than it sounds.

Lenghts
Long is better than short when it comes to phalanges. The fingers should be long in proportion to the palm; they then denote greater intellectuality and mental power, overly long, however, is associated with negative traits and/or a lack of something. For example a very long Virgo phalanx, the bottom segment of the ring finger, is associated with greed. When short and stubby looking, the subject is inclined to animalism and gross materialism.
The lengths of the Jupiter and Apollo fingers must be compared. If the Jupiter finger is shorter the person is often a late bloomer as he / she will follow the dictates of others and will not seek their own goals until their thirties.

Spaces between fingers
When wide between the first and second fingers, independence of thought; between the second and third fingers, independence of circumstances; and wide between the third and fourth fingers, independence of action. A wide between Saturn and Jupiter indicate a tendency to overspend. A wide space between the thumb and first finger denotes independence of will and fearlessness.

Type of fingers

Joints
When the fingers are found loose and inclined to curve backwards, the subject is “open-minded” and quick to grasp ideas or suggestions. They will not, however, have the more methodical stick-at-it quality of those whose fingers are found firm and stiff.
When the fingers are curved inwards, the subject is slower to grasp new ideas, very cautious, and inclined to hold on to what he knows or what he has.

Smooth-jointed fingers are more impulsive than those with “knotty joints”. The “knotty joints” arrest the impetuousness of the disposition and give reflection, love of detail in all their work and are more frequently found in the hands of all great organisers and those who require thought and reflection in carrying out their plans.
When the fingers lean towards one another, they take after the qualities expressed by the finger towards which they lean.
