Rosie the Riveter In American folklore of World War II, name given to a fictional woman who symbolized women’s contributions to the war effort. In most depictions of Rosie she is shown flexing her muscles. Norman Rockwell’s painting Rosie the Riveter is modeled on Michelangelo’s fresco of the prophet Isaiah in the Sistine Chapel.
