Schematomancy

Schematomancy is a form of divination based upon the examination of a person’s outward appearance or physical form in order to obtain information about that individual’s personal history. The practitioner interprets the visible characteristics of the body as signs through which aspects of a person’s past may supposedly be revealed.

The name is derived from the Greek skhēma, meaning “figure”, “form” or “shape”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. Schematomancy therefore literally refers to divination through the interpretation of form.

Method

In schematomancy, attention is directed towards the overall appearance of the individual rather than towards a separate divinatory instrument. The person being examined becomes the object of the reading, with bodily form and visible characteristics treated as sources of symbolic information.

Unlike forms of divination concerned primarily with predicting future events, schematomancy is particularly associated with discovering or interpreting a person’s personal history. Its central principle is that the outward form of an individual may contain signs capable of revealing information about experiences or circumstances connected with that person’s life.

Within a wider classification of divinatory practices, schematomancy belongs most naturally to Divination by Observation, since the method depends upon deliberately examining and interpreting visible characteristics rather than casting lots, manipulating objects or waiting for an unsolicited omen.
