Selenomancy: Divination Through the Moon

Selenomancy is a form of divination in which the phases, appearance and unusual behaviour of the Moon are interpreted as signs of future events or hidden influences. The name derives from the Greek selēnē, meaning “moon”, and manteia, meaning “divination” or “prophecy”.

The Moon has been watched for omens since antiquity. Its changing phases, colour, brightness, halos and visibility through clouds have all been interpreted as meaningful signs. A strange colour might warn of approaching weather or misfortune, while an unusual halo or disturbance around the Moon could be regarded as an indication that the normal order of things had somehow shifted.

Modern selenomancy may also take the form of lunar scrying. One method uses a dark bowl filled with water beneath the light of the full Moon. The practitioner positions the bowl so that the lunar reflection appears upon the surface, then gazes into the water while concentrating upon a question. Shapes, movements, symbols, unexpected images or impressions arising in the mind may then be recorded and interpreted as part of the divination.

In this form of the practice, the water becomes a mirror for the Moon. The practitioner may spend only a few minutes gazing into its reflection or remain until the concentration begins to break. Afterwards, impressions are written down rather than immediately dismissed, since meanings may become clearer only after reflection.

Selenomancy belongs to the ancient occult conviction that the heavens are not silent. The Moon continually changes yet always returns, disappearing into darkness before becoming luminous once more.
