Somatomancy
Somatomancy is a form of divination based upon the observation and interpretation of the human body. The practitioner examines physical characteristics, proportions, shapes, markings, movements or other bodily features and treats them as signs capable of revealing information about a person’s character, destiny, health or future circumstances.
The name is derived from the Greek sōma, meaning “body”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. Somatomancy therefore means literally divination by the body.
Methods
Somatomancy does not refer to one fixed method. Instead, it encompasses a wide range of practices in which different parts of the body become objects of divinatory interpretation.
The diviner may study the shape and proportions of the body, the appearance of particular features, natural markings, lines, asymmetries or other visible characteristics. In some traditions, even involuntary bodily movements or sensations may acquire divinatory significance.
The central principle is that the body is regarded as carrying signs that extend beyond ordinary physical appearance. What might otherwise be seen simply as anatomy becomes, within a divinatory system, a symbolic map through which aspects of personality or fate may supposedly be revealed.
The Body as an Oracle
Somatomancy belongs to a much wider family of divinatory practices that interpret specific parts of the human body. Palmistry examines the hands, cartopedy studies the feet, omphalomancy concerns the navel, while phrenology and related systems focus upon the skull. Other traditions interpret facial features, bodily markings, movements or sensations.
These specialised practices differ considerably in method, but they share the underlying idea that the human body contains visible or perceptible signs capable of revealing hidden qualities.
Somatomancy can therefore be understood as the broader category beneath which many forms of bodily divination may be placed.
Within the Occult World classification, somatomancy belongs most naturally to Divination by Observation, because the practitioner deliberately examines bodily characteristics and interprets them according to a particular symbolic system.
Learn to Read the Body as a Hidden Map
Somatomancy reflects one of the oldest occult ideas about human beings: that the body itself may contain signs of character, destiny and hidden influence. Hands, feet, faces, skulls, navels and countless other features have all been transformed into systems of interpretation by those who believed that fate could leave visible traces upon the flesh.
If you want to understand these systems beyond isolated definitions, enter the Occult World Mystery School and study somatomancy, physiognomy, divination, spirits, ritual magic and the forgotten traditions that treated the human form as an occult text waiting to be read. There are thousands of spirits, gods, demons, magical systems, grimoires and forgotten traditions waiting beyond it. Stop looking at the body only as anatomy and start learning the systems that claimed to reveal what was written beneath the surface.
