Spasmatomancy

Spasmatomancy is a form of divination based upon the observation of spasmodic, involuntary or unexplained movements of the human body. Twitching muscles, sudden movements of the limbs, changes in the features and other involuntary bodily sensations may be interpreted as omens concerning future events or the condition of the person experiencing them. The method was also traditionally used in attempts to predict illness or disease.

The name is derived from the Greek spasmos, meaning “spasm”, and manteia, meaning “prophecy” or “divination”. Spasmatomancy therefore refers literally to divination through spasms or involuntary bodily movements.

Methods of Spasmatomancy

The practice relies upon bodily movements or sensations that occur without deliberate intention. A twitching muscle, throbbing eyebrow, itching palm or unexplained sensation may be treated as a sign whose meaning depends upon the part of the body affected and, frequently, upon whether the sensation occurs on the left or right side.

One traditional interpretation concerns twitching of the eyebrows. If the left eyebrow throbs or twitches, it may be taken as a warning that an enemy will soon be encountered, while twitching of the right eyebrow is considered an indication that a friend will appear. In this system, the distinction between the left and right sides of the body plays an important role in determining whether the omen is favourable or unfavourable.

Similar interpretations are attached to sensations in the ears. A buzzing or unexplained sound in the left ear may signify that slander, criticism or unpleasant words are approaching, whereas the same sensation in the right ear may be understood as a sign of good wishes or favourable speech.

The palms may likewise be read as omens concerning money. An itching left palm is traditionally interpreted as indicating that money will soon be paid out, while an itching right palm suggests that money will be received. These associations transform ordinary bodily sensations into signs through which approaching circumstances are supposedly revealed.

Spasmatomancy differs from forms of divination in which an object is deliberately cast, suspended or manipulated. The body itself becomes the source of the omen, and the diviner interprets movements or sensations that occur involuntarily rather than producing the sign through a ritual action.
