Stercomancy: Divination Through Dung and Hidden Seeds

Stercomancy is an obscure form of divination in which omens are interpreted from animal excrement, particularly bird droppings, or from seeds and other objects discovered within dung. The practice belongs to the broader family of divinatory methods that seek meaning in ordinary natural events.

What most people dismiss as filth becomes, in stercomancy, a physical record of movement, digestion, transformation and release. The diviner studies what has been expelled from the body and asks whether its appearance, contents or unexpected location carries a message.

The term is rarely encountered outside specialised occult dictionaries and encyclopaedic collections of divination. It is commonly defined as the observation of dung—especially bird excrement—or seeds found within it.

Etymology

The name stercomancy combines the Latin stercus, meaning excrement or dung, with the divinatory suffix -mancy. That suffix ultimately derives from the Greek manteia, meaning prophecy, oracle or divination.

The word therefore means, quite literally, divination through excrement.

Although the name may sound humorous or unpleasant to modern readers, it follows the same linguistic pattern as necromancy, pyromancy, hydromancy and many other traditional forms of divination. The material used does not need to be beautiful. It only needs to be capable of carrying or revealing a sign.

Reading What the Body Rejects

Stercomancy is based upon an ancient magical principle: nothing in nature is completely meaningless.

The body transforms food, plants and other matter before releasing what it can no longer use. Dung therefore occupies a strange position between life and decay. It is rejected matter, yet it also enriches the soil, spreads seeds and helps begin new cycles of growth.

To the diviner, this makes it symbolically powerful.

Excrement may represent what has been discarded, concealed or expelled. Seeds surviving inside it may represent something valuable hidden within an unpleasant situation. Dung found in an unexpected place may be interpreted as an intrusion, warning, blessing or disruption, depending upon the circumstances and the system used by the reader.

Stercomancy turns attention towards what respectable society prefers not to examine.

Its lesson is uncomfortable but direct: truth does not always arrive in a beautiful form.

Bird Droppings as Omens

Birds have long been associated with prophecy because they travel between the earth and the sky. Their calls, movements and flight patterns have been interpreted as divine messages in many cultures.

Stercomancy applies this same principle to what birds leave behind.

A sudden dropping from a bird might be examined according to where it fell, the direction from which the bird approached and what the observer was doing or thinking at that moment. A mark landing upon clothing could be read differently from one appearing upon a threshold, altar, vehicle or path.

In popular superstition, being struck by bird droppings is sometimes considered lucky. Stercomancy takes the possibility further by treating the event not merely as good or bad fortune, but as a sign requiring interpretation.

The message would not necessarily concern wealth. It could point towards interruption, humiliation, cleansing, unexpected change or the arrival of something from beyond the person’s immediate control.

Seeds Hidden in Dung

Seeds found inside animal droppings are especially significant because they have survived digestion.

They have passed through darkness, pressure and decomposition without losing their capacity for life. Once released, they may germinate in an entirely new location.

Within a symbolic reading, such a seed could represent endurance, rebirth or an opportunity concealed inside hardship. It might suggest that something believed to have been destroyed is still alive, or that an unpleasant experience contains the beginning of future growth.

Different seeds could theoretically produce different interpretations according to the plant from which they came. A thorny plant might suggest conflict or defence, while a fruit-bearing plant could represent abundance, fertility or the eventual reward of patient effort.

However, stercomancy is so obscure that no universally recognised system of correspondences appears to have survived. Modern interpretations should therefore be presented as symbolic reconstruction rather than as an unbroken ancient tradition.

Stercomancy and Scatomancy

Stercomancy is closely related to scatomancy, another form of divination through human or animal excrement. Scatomancy is also known under several alternative names in occult sources and is generally defined as fortune-telling through the examination of faeces.

The distinction between the two terms is not always clear.

Stercomancy is often described more narrowly as the interpretation of dung, bird droppings or seeds found within excrement. Scatomancy may refer more broadly to the examination of faeces for signs relating to health, character or future events.

Some occult sources also connect scatomancy with terms such as spatilomancy. Terminology in this area is inconsistent, however, and similarly spelled words may refer to unrelated methods. For example, spatulamancy properly refers to divination through an animal’s shoulder blade rather than excrement.

A Divination of Transformation

Stercomancy is not merely strange for the sake of being strange. Its symbolism belongs to a serious magical theme: transformation through decay.

Nature does not recognise the rigid division between purity and impurity created by human society. Waste becomes nourishment. Dead vegetation feeds the soil. Dung spreads seeds. Decomposition creates the conditions from which new life emerges.

The stercomancer looks directly at this process.

The practice asks what has been rejected, what has survived and what may still grow from the remains. It can therefore be understood as a divination concerned with endings that secretly contain beginnings.

What appears worthless may carry potential.

What appears disgusting may contain information.

What has passed through darkness may still be capable of life.

Reconstructing a Stercomantic Reading

Because detailed historical instructions are scarce, anyone exploring stercomancy today should avoid pretending that a single rigid traditional method exists.

A reconstructed reading might consider the species of animal, the location of the dung, its shape, colour, contents and the timing of its appearance. Seeds, feathers, fragments of plants or other recognisable materials could add symbolic layers to the interpretation.

The emotional reaction of the observer might also matter. Disgust, amusement, fear or unexpected curiosity could reveal why the sign has attracted attention.

The purpose would not be to invent a dramatic prophecy from every unpleasant encounter. It would be to observe carefully, recognise meaningful coincidences and interpret natural transformation through a divinatory framework.

Stercomancy belongs to the rawer side of magic. It rejects the comforting belief that prophecy must arrive through polished crystals, elegant cards or beautiful celestial visions.

Sometimes the omen falls directly from the sky.
