Technomancy: Magic Through Technology

Technomancy is a modern form of magical practice involving the use, manipulation or occult interpretation of technology. The term combines techno, referring to technology, with the Greek-derived suffix -mancy, from manteia, meaning divination or prophecy.

Strictly speaking, the construction of the word suggests divination through technology, but modern usage has become much broader. Technomancy may involve computers, electronic devices, algorithms, digital networks or machines being treated as magical tools, symbolic systems or channels through which information and influence can be sought.

Unlike ancient divinatory practices, technomancy is a distinctly modern concept. One of the earliest known appearances of the term occurs in Steve Martindale’s 1990 short story “Technomancy”, published in Aboriginal Science Fiction. Since then, the idea has become increasingly common in science fiction, fantasy, gaming and contemporary occult culture.

The concept is especially powerful because technology already performs acts that earlier generations might easily have interpreted as supernatural. Machines transmit voices across continents, preserve images of the dead, predict behaviour through algorithms and reveal information that remains invisible to ordinary perception. To the technomancer, such systems may become more than tools. They can become part of the magical environment itself.

Modern practitioners sometimes experiment with random number generators, digital sigils, algorithmic divination, electronic communication and other forms of technologically mediated occult practice. In these systems, the screen can become an oracle, the algorithm a generator of signs and the network a new kind of invisible realm through which information moves.

Technomancy therefore stands at a strange frontier between ancient magical thinking and the technological world. Where older occultists looked into mirrors, flames or pools of water, the modern practitioner may stare into a glowing screen and ask essentially the same question: what hidden pattern is trying to reveal itself?
