Ylemlys: The Silent Lion of the Abramelin Tradition
Ylemlys, also spelled Ilemlis, is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, the influential grimoire translated and interpreted by the occultist S. L. MacGregor Mathers. According to Mathers, the name Ylemlys means “the silent lion,” a phrase that gives this obscure spirit a powerful and mysterious symbolic character.
The image of the silent lion is striking. The lion is traditionally a creature of strength, authority, courage and command, but silence changes its meaning. This is not the roaring lion of open domination, but a hidden force, a watchful power, a spirit whose presence may be felt before it is heard. Ylemlys suggests restrained strength, concealed authority and the quiet intensity of a force that does not need to announce itself.
Ylemlys appears in connection with the Holy Guardian Angel working in the Abramelin system. This is important because the Abramelin operation is not merely a catalogue of demons. It is a demanding magical process focused on purification, discipline and the attainment of knowledge and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel. Only after this higher spiritual contact is established does the magician command the lower spirits.
Within this structure, Ylemlys belongs to the court of Prince Ariton, one of the four demonic rulers associated with the cardinal directions. Ariton is part of the directional hierarchy of the Abramelin material, alongside other great infernal princes who govern different regions of the magical universe. To serve in Ariton’s court places Ylemlys within a precise spiritual order, not as a wandering demon, but as a named force within a larger system of command.
Because little is said about Ylemlys beyond his name, meaning and allegiance, much of his significance lies in interpretation. Many spirits in the Abramelin lists appear as brief names rather than fully described beings. Yet in ceremonial magic, names are never insignificant. A name carries vibration, function, place and power. The phrase “silent lion” suggests a spirit of concealed force, disciplined will and hidden rulership.
Ylemlys may be understood as a demon of quiet authority. He does not represent chaos or theatrical terror, but the darker mystery of power held in silence. He belongs to the hidden architecture of the grimoire tradition, where even obscure names point toward deeper occult structures.
To study Ylemlys is to enter the subtle world of Abramelin demonology: a world of spiritual courts, directional rulers, sacred discipline, divine authority and infernal names that have survived through manuscript transmission and magical interpretation.
