Faith, Hope, and Charity, Sts. (second century?) In medieval Christian legend, the three saints were believed to be the children of St. Sophia (holy wisdom). They were said to have been martyred in Rome under the emperor Hadrian. In medieval Gothic art St. Faith is often portrayed as a woman holding a cross or chalice. Feast, 1 August. The English Puritans introduced the English words Faith, Hope, and Charity as given names in the 16th century.
