The Secret Chiefs are in a magical Lodge or order, the most powerful and highest-ranking Adepts; also, discarnate adepts.
Traditionally, the Secret Chiefs were living persons who provided guidance and direction and for the most part were hidden from others. In the late 19th century, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn encouraged the idea that the Secret Chiefs were discarnate beings who could be contacted only by certain high-level initiates through magical and mediumistic techniques.
