Asael

Asael is one of the fallen Watcher Angels associated with the rebellion described in the Book of Enoch. He belongs to the mysterious company of heavenly beings who abandon their appointed place in Heaven and descend into the human world.

According to the Enochian tradition, the Watchers enter into a solemn pact under the leadership of Shemyaza. Their decision binds them together, ensuring that none of them can withdraw once the descent has begun. Asael is counted among the powerful figures within this rebellious host.

The Watchers were organised under leaders sometimes described as the chiefs of tens. Asael appears among these chiefs, suggesting that he was not regarded merely as one of the ordinary members of the fallen company. He occupied a position of authority within the hierarchy of the Watchers.

The story of these beings is ultimately a story about forbidden boundaries. The Watchers cross the division separating the heavenly world from the earthly one. The name Asael has also appeared outside the ancient Enochian material. Moncure Daniel Conway refers to Asael in Demonology and Devil-Lore, where the name is associated with demonic interpretations of elemental power. This represents a much later development of the figure rather than the original setting of the Watcher tradition.

Asael may also be connected linguistically or textually with Azael, although variations in names are common within the long manuscript history surrounding angelological and demonological traditions. Such variations helped create overlapping identities as ancient angelic names passed through religious commentary, occult literature and later demonology.

He begins within a tradition of rebellious heavenly beings, yet later occult and demonological writers increasingly place such figures within the language of demons.
