Fallen Angels: The Angels Cast Out of Heaven
Fallen angels are angels who fall from God’s grace and are punished by banishment from heaven. In later Christian and occult tradition, these fallen beings become associated with demons, rebellion, corruption, forbidden knowledge, and the spiritual struggle between heaven and the powers of darkness.
The idea of fallen angels appears in several ancient religious and apocryphal traditions, especially in the books of Enoch. These texts connect fallen angels with the Watchers: a group of 200 angels who descend from heaven, cohabit with women, and corrupt humanity by teaching forbidden arts and knowledge. Because of their actions, they are severely punished by God.
Fallen Angels in the Books of Enoch
The three versions of the Book of Enoch preserve different traditions about fallen angels. In these writings, the fall is not always described in exactly the same way, but the central theme remains clear: angels cross a forbidden boundary, turn away from divine order, and suffer punishment.
In 2 Enoch, four grades of fallen angels are described.
The first is Satanail, the prince of the fallen ones. Satanail was once a high angel, but he believed he could become greater than God. Because of this pride and rebellion, he was cast out of heaven on the second day of creation and imprisoned in the fifth heaven.
The second group consists of the Watchers, who are also imprisoned in the fifth heaven. They are described as dejected and silent, suffering the consequences of their descent and transgression.
The third group is made up of the apostate angels, the followers of Satanail. These angels plotted with him and turned away from God’s commandments. They are imprisoned in the second heaven, a place of “darkness greater than earthly darkness.” There they hang under guard, awaiting the “measureless judgment.” They are dark in appearance, weep without ceasing, and ask Enoch to pray for them.
The fourth group consists of angels, possibly some of the Watchers, who are sentenced to imprisonment “under the earth.” This image gives the fallen angels an underworld character, linking them with hidden places, punishment, and the depths beneath creation.
The Watchers and Forbidden Knowledge
The Watchers are among the most important fallen angels in occult and apocryphal tradition. Their fall is not only sexual or rebellious; it is also connected with knowledge. They teach humanity arts that were considered dangerous, premature, or forbidden. In different traditions, these teachings include astrology, enchantments, weapon-making, cosmetics, root-cutting, signs of the heavens, and magical knowledge.
This makes the Watchers especially important in the study of demonology and occult history. They are not merely fallen beings; they are transmitters of forbidden wisdom. Their story raises one of the oldest occult questions: when does knowledge become illumination, and when does it become corruption?
Lucifer and the Christian Fall
In Christianity, the figure most closely associated with the fall of angels is Lucifer. He is traditionally understood as an arrogant and prideful angel cast out of heaven. The name is linked to the passage in Isaiah that refers to the “Son of the Morning” or “Morning Star.”
Later Christian tradition identified Lucifer with Satan. According to lore, one-third of the heavenly host fell with him. Some traditions even give the number as 133,306,668 angels. They were said to have fallen for nine days.
Theologians later speculated that a portion of each of the nine orders of angels fell. Others suggested that the fallen angels formed a tenth order. Once fallen, they became demons whose purpose was to tempt, deceive, and ruin human souls. This view was strongly reinforced by influential Christian theologians such as St. Thomas Aquinas.
Fallen Angels in Occult Tradition
In occult tradition, fallen angels occupy a powerful and complicated position. They are associated with rebellion, forbidden knowledge, pride, punishment, and spiritual danger. Yet they are also linked with the transmission of hidden arts and the crossing of boundaries between heaven, earth, and the underworld.
For students of demonology, the fallen angels are essential. They connect the world of angels with the world of demons. They explain why some spirits are described as once belonging to heavenly orders before becoming rulers, princes, dukes, presidents, or legions within demonic hierarchies.
Their stories also reveal a central occult theme: knowledge has a price. The Watchers descend. Lucifer rebels. Satanail plots. The apostate angels turn away from divine command. Each fall begins with desire, pride, or forbidden contact with powers beyond the permitted order.
