Sariel, also known as Sarakiel, Saraqael, Saraqel, Suruquel, Suriel, Uriel and Zerachiel, is a complex angelic figure who appears as both a good angel and a fallen angel in different traditions.

In the Enochian writings, Sariel appears as Saraqel and should not be confused with Uriel. He is associated with cosmic order, heavenly knowledge and the mysteries of the Moon. As a fallen angel, Sariel is said to have taught the course of the Moon.

Angelic Powers and Associations

Sariel rules Aries and is one of the nine angels who preside over the summer solstice.

His connection with Aries links him to force, fire, movement, initiation and spiritual command. His association with the summer solstice places him among angels connected with celestial cycles, light, seasonal power and sacred timing.

As a teacher of the Moon’s course, Sariel belongs to the class of angels who reveal hidden astronomical and esoteric knowledge. This makes him a figure of both illumination and transgression: a being who knows the heavenly order, but who is also linked to forbidden teaching.

Sariel in Hebrew Lore

In Hebrew lore, Sariel is described as the son of Lilith and Samael. In some accounts, his father is Ashmodai, also known as Asmodeus. Sariel is called the “Sword of Samael,” a title that gives him a fierce and martial quality.

His face flames like fire.

At midnight on Yom Kippur, the prayers and acts of sages and elders can call him forth. Sariel appears reluctantly, flying through the air with 130 warriors. All of these warriors have flaming faces.

When summoned, Sariel gives enlightenment to those who call him forth.

Keeper of Heavenly Secrets

Sariel is connected with the secrets of the firmament.

A scribe named Pifiron carries all the secrets of the firmament that have been sealed by Sariel. These secrets are revealed to the elders.

This image presents Sariel as a guardian of celestial mystery. He is not merely a warrior angel or fallen angel, but a keeper of sealed knowledge: the hidden structure of the heavens, the movements of celestial bodies, and the mysteries of divine order.

Sariel in the War of the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness

In the War of the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness, also known as the Triumph of God, one of the Qumran texts, Sariel appears as one of the four leaders of the forces of good.

The human warriors are given exact instructions about who is to fight where, and their weapons are carefully described. There are four subdivisions, or towers, and each tower is to have the name of its archangel inscribed on its shield.

Sariel is assigned to the third tower.

This places him firmly among the angelic commanders of light, order and divine warfare. Although he appears elsewhere as a fallen angel, here he stands among the leaders of the forces of good.

Conclusion

Sariel is one of the more ambiguous and fascinating angels of esoteric tradition. He appears as a good angel, a fallen angel, a lunar teacher, a fiery warrior, a ruler of Aries, a solstice angel and a guardian of celestial secrets.

He is linked to Lilith and Samael, to the course of the Moon, to the secrets of the firmament, and to the angelic armies of the Sons of Light.

Sariel stands between heavenly order and forbidden knowledge.

He is a flame-faced angel of mystery, warfare, revelation and cosmic law.
