Asmaiel

Asmaiel is a demon named in the Ars Theurgia, where he holds the rank of chief duke beneath Armadiel, the infernal king associated with the northeast. His position places him within one of the carefully ordered spirit hierarchies that characterise the Theurgia, a grimoire in which demons are governed not only by rank and direction, but also by precisely defined periods of manifestation.

Asmaiel commands eighty-four lesser spirits, giving him considerable authority within Armadiel’s court. Rather than appearing as an isolated entity, he therefore stands at the head of his own subordinate company, carrying the authority of his superior while exercising command over the spirits assigned to him.

Time is particularly important in Asmaiel’s case.

The Ars Theurgia divides the day into fifteen equal portions, and Asmaiel is allotted the ninth portion. His connection with this period is described as absolute. He will not manifest during any other division of the day, making observance of the correct timing an essential element in the magical framework surrounding him.

This detail illustrates one of the defining characteristics of Theurgic spirit magic. The magician is not presented as someone who can simply summon any spirit whenever desired. Instead, the invisible world is portrayed as operating according to its own hierarchy, geography, and schedule. A demon may possess considerable power, yet remain accessible only when the conditions associated with its office are correctly observed.

His allegiance to Armadiel links him to the northeastern quarter, while his rank connects him to a wider infernal government and his appointed period establishes a boundary that even the magician is expected to respect.

There is something particularly revealing about a spirit that simply refuses to appear outside its appointed hour.

It suggests that, within the worldview of the grimoire, ritual timing is not decoration but authority. The magician may issue the conjuration, but the hierarchy determines when the door can open.
