Ipakol: Demon of the Four Infernal Princes

Ipakol is a demon named in S. L. MacGregor Mathers’ translation of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. His name has been connected with a possible Hebrew root carrying the sense of “breathing forth,” although the surviving material gives no detailed explanation of his individual nature, appearance or specific powers.

Within the Abramelin system, Ipakol belongs to the immense hierarchy of spirits governed by the four infernal princes associated with the cardinal directions: Oriens, Paimon, Ariton and Amaimon. These four rulers stand at the head of vast companies of subordinate demons, and Ipakol is counted among those spirits subject to their authority.

Like many lesser demons preserved in the grimoire tradition, Ipakol is known primarily through his name and his position within a larger structure of command. The absence of an elaborate description does not make him insignificant. In ceremonial magic, rank, allegiance and hierarchy are themselves central to understanding how spirits are classified and approached.

Ipakol therefore belongs to the shadowed network of infernal powers preserved within the Abramelin tradition, a system in which even obscure names form part of a vast supernatural order governed through ritual authority and strict chains of command.
