Metafel: The Abramelin Spirit Beneath the Four Infernal Princes

Metafel is a demon named in the Mathers edition of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, one of the most important grimoires in the Western ceremonial magic tradition. Unlike the more famous demons of the Goetia, Metafel is not usually described with a detailed appearance, personality or mythic story. Instead, the name appears within the structured spirit lists of the Abramelin system, where demons are organised beneath powerful infernal rulers.

Metafel serves beneath the four infernal princes of the cardinal directions: Oriens, Paimon, Ariton and Amaimon. These four rulers are associated with the directional powers of the magical universe, forming a kind of infernal map through which spirits are ordered, commanded and understood.

In the Abramelin tradition, direction matters. East, west, north and south are not merely physical locations, but spiritual zones of influence. The spirits who serve under the four princes belong to this larger magical geography, where every name has its place within an invisible hierarchy.

Because Metafel is listed beneath these four infernal princes, the demon can be understood as part of a wide network of spirits governed by directional authority. This places Metafel within a current of obedience, command and magical structure, rather than as an isolated or independent demonic force.

The Abramelin system is deeply concerned with discipline, purification and spiritual authority. The magician does not approach spirits casually. First, the practitioner seeks knowledge and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel, and only after this higher spiritual alignment does the magician command the lower spirits. In that context, names like Metafel are not random. They belong to a carefully arranged magical order in which even obscure spirits serve a specific function within the hierarchy.

Metafel’s mystery lies partly in the lack of detail. Many spirits in grimoires appear only as names, without elaborate descriptions. Yet in ceremonial magic, the name itself is powerful. A spirit name acts as a key, a point of contact, and a marker of place within the hidden architecture of the unseen world.

Metafel therefore represents one of the quieter but still significant spirits of the Abramelin tradition: a demon preserved through manuscript transmission, magical hierarchy and the old belief that every spirit, even the obscure ones, has its role within the great machinery of occult command.
