Amediet

Amediet is an infernal duke named in the Ars Theurgia, where he appears among the spirits serving Icosiel, a wandering prince of the air. Within this hierarchy Amediet possesses considerable authority, commanding two thousand two hundred lesser spirits who operate beneath him.

Icosiel belongs to the class of wandering princes described throughout the Ars Theurgia. Unlike rulers permanently fixed to a particular quarter of the compass, these princes move through the aerial regions with their attendant courts. Amediet therefore belongs to a mobile infernal hierarchy whose presence is determined as much by time and circumstance as by direction.

Amediet has a particular affinity for houses and prefers to manifest within inhabited buildings rather than in remote landscapes or exposed natural places. This gives him an unusual character among the aerial spirits. Although he belongs to a wandering court, his preferred point of contact is the enclosed human dwelling, transforming an ordinary domestic space into the place where the invisible hierarchy may become perceptible.

His appearance is also governed by strict limitations.

The Ars Theurgia divides the daylight period into fifteen equal portions, and Amediet is assigned specifically to the seventh portion. He is expected to appear only during the hours and minutes contained within that division of the day. Outside his appointed period, the structure of the text implies that he cannot simply be compelled to manifest at the magician’s convenience.

This restriction reveals something fundamental about the magical universe of the Ars Theurgia. Spirits do not merely possess names and ranks. Their accessibility is governed by an elaborate order in which authority, timing, hierarchy, and place determine how the invisible world intersects with the human one.

Amediet may command thousands of subordinate spirits, yet even a duke of such rank remains subject to the laws governing his appointed hour.

That tension between enormous supernatural authority and strict ritual limitation is one of the most fascinating characteristics of Theurgic demonology. The magician may seek to command spirits, but first the magician must learn the architecture within which those spirits themselves are commanded.
