Apolhun

Apolhun is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. He appears among the multitude of spirits who serve beneath the four great demonic princes of the cardinal directions: Oriens, Paimon, Ariton, and Amaimon.

Within the Abramelin system, these four princes govern the quarters of the magical universe and command numerous subordinate demons. Apolhun belongs to this extended infernal hierarchy and is one of the many named spirits whose identity is preserved through grimoire tradition.

Apolhun in the Abramelin Tradition

The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage presents a highly structured system of ceremonial magic. Its demonic spirits are not random or chaotic forces, but are arranged beneath powerful rulers and princes.

Apolhun is listed as one of the spirits who serve Oriens, Paimon, Ariton, and Amaimon. This places him within a cosmological framework connected with the four directions, magical authority, and the command of spirits.

The Abramelin system is not casual demon work. It is built upon purification, spiritual discipline, prayer, and the attainment of the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel before the magician attempts to command infernal spirits.

Meaning of the Name Apolhun

In his translation of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, S. L. MacGregor Mathers notes the similarity between the name Apolhun and Apollyon.

Apollyon is a fallen angel named in the Book of Revelation. His name means the Destroyer. Because of this resemblance, Mathers suggests that Apolhun’s name may also carry the meaning of destroyer.

This interpretation gives Apolhun a forceful and dangerous character. His name evokes ruin, dissolution, collapse, and the breaking down of established forms.

Apolhun and Apollyon

Although Apolhun and Apollyon should not automatically be treated as the same being, the similarity between their names is significant.

Apollyon appears in apocalyptic tradition as an angel of destruction. His role is terrifying, connected with plague, judgement, and devastation. By linking Apolhun’s name with Apollyon, Mathers places Apolhun within a similar symbolic field.

Apolhun may therefore be understood as a demon whose nature is associated with destructive force, whether literal, spiritual, magical, or symbolic.

Demon of Destruction

If Apolhun’s name does indeed mean the Destroyer, then his occult meaning centres on destruction as a spiritual principle.

Destruction is not always meaningless chaos. In magical and mystical systems, destruction can also mean the removal of obstacles, the ending of corrupt structures, the breaking of false attachments, or the collapse of what can no longer endure.

Yet this force is dangerous. Destruction without wisdom becomes devastation. Power without restraint becomes ruin. Apolhun represents a current that must never be approached lightly.

The Four Princes of the Directions

Apolhun serves beneath Oriens, Paimon, Ariton, and Amaimon, the four demonic princes associated with the cardinal directions.

Oriens is generally connected with the East.

Paimon is commonly associated with the West.

Ariton, also known as Egyn, is associated with the North.

Amaimon is associated with the South.

Together, these princes form a demonic map of the magical cosmos. Their servants, including Apolhun, operate within this ordered hierarchy of spirits.

Occult Interpretation of Apolhun

Apolhun may be interpreted as a spirit of destructive transformation. His name suggests a force that breaks, tears down, and brings an end to what stands in its path.

In psychological and magical terms, such a demon may represent the destructive impulse within the self, the urge to dismantle, sever, reject, or annihilate. This can be dangerous when unconscious, but powerful when understood and placed under higher spiritual authority.

Apolhun’s lesson is that destruction must be governed by wisdom. Not everything that can be destroyed should be destroyed.

Working with Abramelin Spirits

The spirits of the Abramelin tradition belong to a serious and demanding magical system. They should not be approached casually, experimentally, or without protection.

In the Abramelin operation, the magician first seeks divine alignment and contact with the Holy Guardian Angel. Only then are the demonic spirits summoned, constrained, and commanded.

Apolhun, like the other spirits of this grimoire, belongs to that disciplined ceremonial context. His destructive symbolism makes caution especially important.

Apolhun’s Spiritual Lesson

Apolhun embodies the mystery of destruction. He reminds the magician that some forces exist to end, break, clear, and dissolve.

Such power may be necessary when corruption, stagnation, or obstruction must be removed. But it can also become catastrophic if driven by anger, arrogance, or uncontrolled will.

Apolhun stands as a warning: the power to destroy is sacred only when governed by discipline, clarity, and spiritual authority.
