Archeomancy

Archeomancy is a form of divination performed through the use of sacred relics, particularly the remains of revered or holy individuals. The practice is based upon the belief that objects or substances connected with the dead may retain spiritual significance and can therefore become instruments through which hidden knowledge or future events are revealed.

The name is derived from the Greek arkhaios, meaning “ancient”.

Methods

One traditional form of archeomancy is associated with Roman diviners, who were said to scatter the ashes of a deceased holy person and observe the patterns created as the ashes fell.

The shapes, arrangements and distributions formed by the scattered ashes were then interpreted as omens concerning future events. The ashes themselves were significant because they had belonged to a person considered sacred or spiritually powerful, giving the divination a connection not only with death but also with the perceived sanctity of the deceased.

This method combines the symbolic power of relics with the unpredictable formation of patterns. The practitioner does not consciously determine how the ashes will fall; instead, their final arrangement provides the material from which the prediction is made.
