Iaresin : A Servant of the Four Infernal Princes

Iaresin is a demon named in S. L. MacGregor Mathers’ translation of The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. Within that grimoire tradition, he appears among the spirits serving the great demonic princes who govern the four directions.

His allegiance is connected with Oriens, Paimon, Ariton and Amaimon, whose authority extends across the directional structure of the Abramelin hierarchy. Iaresin therefore belongs to a system in which demonic power is not presented as random or chaotic. It is organised according to rank and spiritual jurisdiction.

Mathers suggests that the name Iaresin may derive from a Hebrew word carrying the sense of “possessing.” If this interpretation is correct, the name may hint at a spirit whose nature is connected with control or ownership. The surviving text, however, does not provide enough detail to define a specific power or ritual function with certainty.

This obscurity is common within the Abramelin material. Many spirits are preserved primarily through their names and allegiances rather than through elaborate descriptions. Their importance lies partly in the immense magical hierarchy to which they belong.

Iaresin therefore survives as a fragment of a much larger occult structure, one in which names carry authority and spiritual relationships determine power.
