Iparkas: Commander of the Infernal Cavalry

Iparkas is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. According to S. L. MacGregor Mathers, his name may derive from a word meaning “commander of cavalry,” a title that immediately gives this otherwise obscure spirit an atmosphere of movement, command and martial authority.

Within the Abramelin hierarchy, Iparkas serves the four great infernal princes of the cardinal directions: Oriens, Paimon, Ariton and Amaimon. These rulers stand over vast companies of subordinate spirits, and Iparkas is counted among those who answer to their authority.

Because of this connection, the Abramelin tradition associates Iparkas with powers operating through the four princes, including the granting of knowledge, familiars and visions to the magician who summons him within the ritual structure of the grimoire. His identity is therefore tied not only to infernal rank, but also to revelation, supernatural assistance and the acquisition of hidden information.

Very little else is said about Iparkas. No elaborate physical description survives, and no independent mythology surrounds him. Like many demons preserved in ceremonial magic, his importance lies in his place within a larger chain of command, where names, ranks and allegiances form part of a carefully ordered supernatural world.
