Lyut

Lyut is a demon named in the Driscoll edition of the Sworn Book, a fourteenth-century magical text concerned with the summoning of both angels and demons. Within its infernal hierarchy, Lyut serves beneath Harthan, a king associated with the element of water.

Lyut is also connected with the western region, reinforcing his place within the directional structure of the grimoire. The Sworn Book repeatedly links spirits with elements and quarters, presenting the unseen world as something organised through correspondences rather than as a chaotic collection of supernatural beings.

When Lyut manifests, he is said to possess a mottled complexion and a large, ample body. His appearance is striking, but his temperament is not described as uniformly hostile. He is portrayed as witty and agreeable, suggesting a spirit capable of presenting himself in a surprisingly personable manner.

That pleasant nature has limits. Lyut is also described as jealous, which introduces an unpredictable quality into his character. This contrast between charm and jealousy makes him more complicated than a spirit defined entirely by aggression or malice.

Lyut is said to possess the ability to assist in avenging wrongs. Within the magical worldview of the Sworn Book, this gives him a distinctly retaliatory function, allowing his power to be directed toward correcting an offence through supernatural means.

He is also credited with the ability to move objects from one place to another. Another power attributed to him is the creation of darkness, allowing concealment to spread over a place or situation.

The text further associates Lyut with the use of special perfumes during magical operations. Fragrance and fumigation played an important role in many medieval magical traditions, where particular scents were believed to correspond with spiritual forces and help establish the conditions appropriate for their manifestation.

Lyut therefore emerges as an unusually versatile spirit within the Sworn Book. His connection with water and the west places him within the cosmological structure of the text, while his temperament and attributed powers give him a more distinctive identity than many of the lesser demons preserved in medieval grimoires.
