Marag: Demon of Magoth and Kore

Marag is a demon named in The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, where he appears among the many subordinate spirits arranged beneath greater infernal rulers. Within the hierarchy of the grimoire, Marag is said to serve under the dual authority of Magoth and Kore, two powerful demonic figures who command numerous lesser spirits.

The surviving descriptions give Marag no elaborate appearance, personality or individual magical office. His importance lies instead in his place within the structured infernal hierarchy of Abramelin, a system in which demons are understood through relationships of command, obedience and rank rather than as isolated supernatural beings.

In the 1725 edition of the work published by Peter Hammer in Cologne, the demon’s name appears in the variant form Charag. Such changes in spelling are common in older magical manuscripts and printed grimoires, where names passed through different languages, copyists and editions before reaching modern readers.

Marag therefore belongs to the vast shadowed population of lesser spirits whose names survive because they formed part of a larger system of ceremonial magic. To encounter his name is to glimpse only one fragment of the immense infernal architecture preserved within the Abramelin tradition.
