Marbuel: The Lion Prince of Secrets and Hidden Treasures

Marbuel is a spirit named in the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, where he is described as one of the Seven Great Princes of Spirits. When summoned, Marbuel appears in the form of a great old lion, a powerful image that suggests age, authority, guardianship and hidden wisdom.

Unlike spirits whose powers are connected mainly with destruction, temptation or fear, Marbuel is associated with revelation, honour and treasure. He is said to be a finder of secret things, able to uncover what is hidden and bring concealed knowledge into the open. This makes him a spirit of discovery, not only in the material sense, but also in the symbolic and magical sense.

Marbuel can also bestow honours upon the magician. This suggests influence over reputation, recognition and elevation. In grimoire magic, honour is not merely vanity; it can represent status, authority, dignity and the ability to be acknowledged by others. A spirit who grants honours is therefore connected with social power as well as occult power.

One of Marbuel’s most striking abilities is his power to deliver treasures from both water and land to the summoner. This gives him dominion over hidden wealth buried in the earth or concealed beneath waters. In magical symbolism, land often represents the solid, material world: property, gold, inheritance, buried things and practical resources. Water, by contrast, represents the unconscious, mystery, emotion, memory and the depths where forgotten things remain hidden. Marbuel’s power over both suggests that he can reveal treasure from multiple realms: physical, psychic and spiritual.

His form as an old lion adds further meaning. The lion has long been a symbol of kingship, courage, solar force and command. But Marbuel is not simply a lion; he is a great old lion, suggesting ancient strength and mature authority. He is not the young lion of wild impulse, but the elder guardian of secrets, treasures and honours.

Because of his leonine form and his office as a revealer of secrets, Marbuel has sometimes been compared to the Goetic demon Marbas. This comparison is tempting, especially because Marbas also appears in the form of a lion and is associated with hidden knowledge. The possible connection is strengthened by Marbuel’s seal, which contains a pattern of three circles connected by radiating lines. This design distantly echoes the traditional Goetic sigil of Marbas, suggesting that these two spirits may share symbolic or textual roots.

Whether Marbuel and Marbas are directly related or simply part of a broader lion-spirit current in grimoire tradition, the similarity is significant. Both figures show how spirits could shift across magical texts, appearing under altered names, changed seals and slightly different functions. The grimoires often preserve these traces like fragments of an older magical language.

Marbuel stands as a spirit of hidden things: secret knowledge, buried treasure, concealed honour and occult discovery. His mystery belongs to the old grimoire world, where spirits guarded the unseen wealth of the earth, the waters and the magician’s own destiny.
