Merseburg Charms

Merseburg Charms : In German literary folklore, two charms in alliterative verse recorded from oral sources around 800 c.e. The first is to be used for freeing prisoners from their bonds, while the second is for curing an injury. Several Germanic gods are named in the second charm.

Phol and Wodan went to the forest.
Where Balder’s horse sprained its foot.
Then Sinthgunt charmed it, and Sunna her sister;
Then Friia sang charms, and Volla her sister;
Then Wodan sang charms, as he well could:
be it bone-sprain, be it blood-sprain, be it limb-sprain
bone to bone, blood to blood,
limb to limb, be they thus glued together.
