Onaris

Onaris: The Demon of Divination, Scrying and Vision

Onaris is a demon associated with the arts of divination, scrying and visionary perception. He appears in the Munich Handbook, a medieval grimoire containing magical operations, spirit names and ritual instructions. In this text, Onaris is called upon to assist in the gaining of visions, making him a spirit connected with hidden sight, magical revelation and the opening of the inner eye.

Unlike demons who are described as rulers, warriors or tempters, Onaris belongs to the more subtle current of occult practice. His power is not presented through destruction or domination, but through the act of seeing beyond ordinary sight. He is linked to those moments when the practitioner seeks answers through images, reflections, dreams, symbols or supernatural impressions.

Scrying is one of the oldest forms of divination. It may involve gazing into a mirror, water, crystal, flame, smoke or another reflective surface in order to receive visions. In grimoire magic, such visions were not treated as simple imagination. They were often understood as messages, spirit communications or glimpses into hidden realities. Onaris, as a spirit called upon for visionary aid, stands at this threshold between the visible and invisible worlds.

The Munich Handbook places Onaris within a tradition where demons and spirits could be summoned for specific magical purposes. Some spirits were asked to reveal secrets. Others were called for knowledge, love, protection, treasure, dreams or influence. Onaris’ connection with visions suggests a role in unveiling what is concealed, whether through symbolic images, inner impressions or supernatural sight.

Symbolically, Onaris may be understood as a demon of occult perception. He represents the dangerous and fascinating desire to see what is hidden: the future, the truth behind appearances, the movements of spirits, or the unseen forces shaping human life. His current belongs to the mirror, the dark water, the candle flame and the dreamlike state in which ordinary consciousness begins to dissolve.

Yet a spirit of vision also carries a warning. Not every image is truth, and not every vision should be trusted without discernment. Scrying requires patience, discipline and interpretation. The practitioner must learn to distinguish between genuine insight, personal fantasy, fear, desire and spiritual deception. Onaris therefore belongs not only to the art of seeing, but also to the deeper responsibility of understanding what has been seen.

To study Onaris is to enter the shadowed world of medieval spirit work, where divination was not merely fortune-telling, but a ritual act of contact with invisible powers. His name reminds us that the old grimoires are filled with spirits of vision, knowledge and revelation — beings who stand at the edge of the mirror, waiting to show the magician what lies beyond.
